Executive Director's Message

It is back to full steam ahead here at Miistakis after a relatively quiet summer with students gone from campus and staff taking much needed vacation. As we roll into fall, we are pleased to share our latest annual report. Over the course of a year Miistakis works on dozens of applied conservation research projects - many that we conceptualize, design and implement and some that others come to us with for our support, based on our conservation expertise. This past year was no exception. Over the year we worked on 25 different projects with 55 different partners - we have lots to share so please take a look and let us know what you think.

As many of you know, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas is currently developing a Nature Strategy for the province. This strategy is intended to be a made-in-Alberta approach for conserving, managing and restoring nature. Now, more than ever, it is important that we have a shared vision for the future where nature can thrive. Miistakis whole-heartedly supports the development of this much needed Nature Strategy to maintain our invaluable natural landscapes, biodiversity and ecosystem services. A Nature Strategy for Alberta must be bold and proactive. It must address the key issues of biodiversity loss, ecosystem function and water security and must outline measurable provincial goals and targets with accompanying specific actions addressing land use planning, parks and protected areas, biodiversity conservation, Indigenous-led conservation and nature-based solutions.

The Miistakis Institute looks forward to supporting the development and implementation of this strategy and now is the time to share YOUR thoughts to inform the development of Alberta's nature strategy. From now till November 7 you can participate in an online survey to provide your input.

Lastly, Miistakis is hosting our annual mingle event on Wednesday November 20 where we will be celebrating 10 years being affiliated with Mount Royal University. We hope to see you there!

Happy Fall everyone,
