From Data to Application: How wetland datasets can inform conservation

The Bow River Regional Wetland Datasets website has a fresh update!

We've reorganized our Resources page to make it easier for you to explore the different types of tools, guides, and references available. In addition, we partnered with the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI), the Bow River Basin Council (BRBC), and the City of Calgary to create real-world examples showing how these datasets can be applied. These short case studies are designed to inspire new ways of using the data in your own work.

In collaboration with ABMI, we developed a blog post illustrating how wetland coverage across the entire study region has changed over time - complete with guidance for replicating the analysis in a smaller subregion of your choice. The BRBC case study explores how the datasets were integrated into their new online State of the Watershed Report, including insights into wetland density and the number of restorable basins across the basin's watersheds. Finally, the City of Calgary case study demonstrates how the datasets could support a potential Upstream Watershed Investment Granting Program.

Please visit bowregionwetlands.ca to learn more about the datasets and use the map tool on the website to view the data.

Have you been using these datasets? If so, we'd love to know how. Please reach out to nilo@rockies.ca.

Thanks to The City of Calgary and an Anonymous Funder for supporting this project. Thanks also to the Bow River Basin Council, ABMI and the City of Calgary for partnering with us on the case studies.
