In 2009, Alberta’s existing conservation easement legislation was expanded to include conservation of agricultural land as an allowable purpose. Ontario had made a similar expansion to their CE legislation in 2005. In neither case was a specific policy direction articulated as to what outcomes were desired from these changes. Over the last year, Miistakis has worked on two projects to better understand the challenges this policy vacuum creates, and suggest ways to address it. Miistakis assisted the Environmental Law Centre in Edmonton with a report requested by the Government of Alberta, and with the Alberta Land Trust Alliance with a report requested by the Government of Canada.
