On January 23, 2018, the Miistakis Institute, along with partners County of Newell, Wheatland County, and Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties, hosted an education session on the development of renewable energy in rural municipalities. The event was near capacity with over 85 people attending the event, representing rural municipalities, government agencies, solar and wind industry, non-governmental organizations, and others. The morning consisted of presentations given by Miistakis Institute (Rural Municipal Renewable Energy Decision Support Tools Update), Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO's Role in the Renewable Energy Development Process), Alberta Utilities Commission (How Do Municipalities Fit into the Regulatory Process?), and Alberta Environment and Parks (Wildlife and Wildlife Habitat Directives for Wind and Solar).

The afternoon agenda consisted of two panel discussions facilitated by Kelly Learned, Miistakis Institute: an industry panel with the Canadian Wind Energy Association and the Canadian Solar Industry Association; and a Municipal panel with the Municipal District of Taber and the County of Newell.

After the conclusion of the panels, participants had the opportunity to network or contribute to the facilitated table topic discussions on opportunities/challenges and remaining knowledge gaps and questions. The day wrapped up with a site tour of the Elemental Energy solar development just outside of Brooks.

We would like to thank our partners (County of Newell, Wheatland County, and Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties), the venue (Heritage Inn Hotel & Convention Centre), and Elemental Energy staff for your contribution to making the Rural Municipalities and Renewable Energy Development Education Session a huge success!

If you were unable to attend the education session, please find the presentations posted on our website here.
