Amphibian eDNA Results

article image

We are excited to share the results from our 2023-2024 amphibian monitoring in Rocky View County and Foothills County.

In 2023 and 2024, we sampled 75 wetlands throughout the greater Calgary region to determine which amphibian eDNA was present. As well, we monitored 21 wetlands with Acoustic Recording Units (ARUs). We detected eDNA of boreal chorus frog, wood frog and tiger salamander. The ARUs detected calls of boreal chorus frog, western toad and wood frog (note tiger salamander do not call). We used this information to identify core wetland areas throughout the region based on predicted probability of species occupancy and important probable movement pathways indicating likely wetland connectivity through connectivity modelling.

A sincere thank you to the landowners and land trusts that worked with us to provide access to wetlands on their property! Landowners have been contacted with results specific to their site. Check out the summary here.

This project was funded by the Calgary Foundation, an anonymous donor, and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.
