Rock Creek

article image The Rock Creek Conservation Initiative is focused on preserving important wildlife habitat and watersheds along a portion of the east slopes of the Rockies near Pincher Creek. Miistakis has been supporting the Initiative since the outset in several capacities including mapping of landscape values, development of the conservation strategy, and through coordination with other related projects including the Highway 3 project.

With the conservation strategy for the Initiative complete, Miistakis is now actively supporting the work of the Southern Alberta Land Trust Society (SALTS) in their efforts to place easements on the most ecologically-valuable lands. There have been several recent successes for the project. These include the purchase of a private parcel by the Alberta Government critical for wildlife connectivity, and the placement of conservation easements by SALTS on 640 acres. In addition, remote wildlife cameras were deployed in 2011 just north and south of Highway 3 within the project area. They captured a tremendous volume and diversity of species using this relatively narrow corridor further supporting the value of the project to wildlife. Photo credit: Danah Duke
