Miistakis Intern Profiles

We are lucky enough to have welcomed two student interns at Miistakis this fall - meet Spencer Howe and Alexa Romano. They will be helping us with snow tracking at a wildlife monitoring site at Priddis Slough in Calgary, as well as supporting various conservation projects through literature reviews and citizen science participant engagement.

Spencer Howe

Spencer is completing her final semester of the Environmental Science program at Mount Royal University where upon graduation, she hopes to begin her career in the field of consulting. She has completed 2 student work terms in the upstream oil and gas sector with a main focus on ground and surface water sampling, and data analysis. Spencer is passionate about the outdoors and enjoys hiking with her dog Luther, camping, and kayaking. This year, she has volunteered with the fish rescue program through Trout Unlimited and hopes to participate again in 2021.

Alexa Romano

My name is Alexa Romano and I am a fourth year student at the University of Western Ontario. I am majoring in general biology with a focus on conservation biology and ecology. In addition to my major I am working on getting a certificate in geographic information science (GIS). Growing up in Alberta has given me an opportunity to get close with nature and wildlife from a young age which is probably why biology interests me. I have also been lucky enough to do a field course in Belize during my second year as well as an exchange in Australia this past year. Both of these were amazing learning opportunities and gave me tons of exposure to field research. Having those kinds of experiences have really helped me discover what I want to do with my degree and what I want to do once I have graduated. I am hoping to have a career in biology or the environmental field in the future!
