Ecological Connectivity in Pincher Creek

New Miistakis report maps ecological connectivity to guide land-use planning

A new technical report presents an ecological network for the Municipal District of Pincher Creek, offering valuable insights to support sustainable land-use planning and biodiversity conservation. The study uses structural connectivity modeling validated by wildlife movement data within the M.D. to identify wildlife movement corridors, core habitats, and road segments with high collision risks. Developed in collaboration with local planners and conservation experts, the report provides a practical tool for integrating ecological connectivity into municipal planning and management decisions, helping to maintain the resilience of both ecosystems and communities in this region. We are now working on an Ecological Corridor Conservation Action Strategy for the M.D. of Pincher Creek to translate connectivity insights into coordinated conservation action.

Thank you to Parks Canada's National Program for Ecological Corridors, the Calgary Foundation, Wilburforce Foundation, Woodcock Foundation, and Alberta Real Estate Foundation for supporting this work.
